The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself. People will flow in and out of your life but the one person who is sticking around for the long haul is you. That's why it is crucial to strive to come to a place of inner peace with who you are.
Self-compassion is the key to inner peace. Many of us spend a good part of our lives running away from ourselves. Everyone has a different way of escaping themselves. Some people do it with busy schedules, others do it with an evening glass of Pinot followed by another and another. When you can look at yourself in the mirror dead on and fully take in all of you, including the aspects of yourself that you would rather shove in a dusty box under the bed, you no longer have anything to run from.
Better yet, the moment you learn to love and have compassion for the most shameful parts of you, is the moment that you are free. You no longer have anything to hide from others or yourself nor do you require validation from others to feel good about who you are as a person. When you have compassion for yourself, you are whole on your own and at peace with who you are.
