#GrindingIsNotTheGoal

August 8, 2018

If you've scrolled through Instagram ever, you know that there is a thing around #grinding. Modern culture so often praises the act of working hard and endlessly that many seem to have forgotten what it even is that we are grinding for. Don't get me wrong, grinding is an essential part of moving towards where you want to go. However, there is a difference between working hard to reach your full potential and drudging upstream for the sake of grinding alone. #grinding in and of itself is useless. If you are slaving away with no clear destination in mind, you are wasting your time. An essential aspect of creating a rich, meaningful life is pouring your time and energy into things that give you a sense of purpose. Here's how to make sure that all of that grinding is taking you somewhere meaningful.

Have a vision.

Everything great originates from a strong vision. The vision is your end destination, where you want your daily efforts to take you. Grinding without a vision to work towards is meaningless. Before doing a single thing, ask yourself what it is that you want. Don't think too much about this, rather feel out what it is that your heart is hungry for. Jot down what pops up and create a tangible reminder of your vision to look at on a daily basis. Whether it be in the form of a mission statement or a vision board, being constantly reminded of what it is you want will propel you through the hard things as you work towards your vision.

Mold your life around your vision, starting with your day job.

Now that you have a clear destination in mind, align your life with this vision. This means analyzing how you spend your days and determining whether your actions are pulling you closer to or farther from your vision. It is likely that a good portion of your daily life is spent at work. If your job is not helping you get to where you want to be, aside from footing your basic survival needs, it is pulling you offtrack. Select a job that grants you entry into the universe you want to exist in. Even if you are only in a position to apply for entry level jobs, there is no reason that you can't apply for a job that will give you the experience and connections you need to move closer towards your vision. When you align your daily grind with your long-term vision, you go to places that #grinding alone could never take you.

The magic question

When trying to determine where best to place your attention, ask yourself this question:

Does this give me more energy than it takes from me?

If the answer is yes, then keep on keeping on. What you are doing is likely aligned with who you are and what you want to create in the world. If you feel more drained from what you are doing than you do energized and uplifted , #grinding it out is a waste of your time. This is about tapping into your intuition to make choices that are most aligned with your life purpose. The way that you feel from a gut-level serves as a compass guide, letting you know whether or not you are on the right track.

Life isn't about #grinding it out for the sake of racking up achievements to make other people think you're a somebody. At the end of life, my guess is that we won't be celebrating the amount of time we spent laboring over projects we didn't care about or staying on top of Herculean email inboxes. What will count is how fiercely we loved, how much of our energy was poured into things that gave us purpose. Do #grind, pursue your passions with relentless enthusiasm. But don't grind for nothing other than the sake of grinding. Make sure that your actions are bringing you somewhere aligned with who you are and what you want to contribute to the world.
